Do I need a dog licence?
All dogs aged six months or more must be licensed each year under the Dogs (Jersey) Law 1961. Younger dogs, or any dogs kept and used solely by a blind or deaf person for their guidance, do not need a licence.
Each licence is specific to one dog and cannot be transferred to another dog.
How and when do I apply for a dog licence?
You must submit your dog permit application form to the parish in which you live by 31 January each year. You can get a form from your parish or you can download it below.
Please give details of each dog and enclose the fee of £5.00 per dog. If you submit your form late (if it's received after 31 January) you'll be charged an extra £5.00 per dog. Cheques should be made payable to your parish.
Changes in circumstances
Please tell your parish if:
you change your address
you sell or re-home your dog
your dog dies
If your dog has a microchip you should also inform the database provider of any changes.
Your obligations as a dog owner
A collar for your dog
Your dog must wear a collar inscribed with your name, address, and contact number when in any public place or road. You may be fined if your dogs does not have one.
A pack of hounds or dog being used for sporting purposes / capture or destruction of vermin does not need a collar.
Walking your dog
You can exercise your dog on Jersey beaches at any time, but between 1 May and 30 September they must be kept on a lead between 10.30am and 6pm.
Dogs are allowed in many parks but most have specific rules. Please read the signs and follow the instructions.
Clearing up after your dog
It's your duty to clean up after your dog and you can be fined up to £500 if you don't. This applies to all beaches and parks and to all public areas including roads and pavements.
Lost or stray dogs
Stray dogs should be reported to the duty centenier or the parish hall of the parish where the dog is found.
If you can, you should contact the owner at the address / telephone number shown on the collar. Unidentified stray dogs will be taken into care and the owner will be liable for collection and housing costs incurred (a minimum of £65 per dog). Dogs which are not claimed within seven days will be re-homed or sold.
If your dog is lost please report it to the duty centenier or parish hall.
