I had always dreamt of being in a band, even so far as to tell my parent sat the age of 6 that I wanted to be a punk rocker when I grew up! So at the age of 14 I instinctively began to learn how to play the guitar…
After realising I was terrible at playing stringed instruments, I decided I wanted to become a drummer. I got my first drum kit for Christmas in 1993, a Pearl Export Kit.
Between 1994 and 1999, I was actively involved in loads of bands playing with many numerous people. In the summer of 1999 I formed ‘The Truth and Other Lies’ with some school friends and we recorded a 3 track demo at Gilbert O’Sullivan’s studio. That was the catalyst that made me realise that I wanted to be part of the music business and make music my living.
Through some line-up changes, I helped to form the band ‘Esquimo’. We played several gigs around Jersey including a show that the Opera House, which was the first time a band had headlined there. Unfortunately in the winter of 2002 the band split up but we still luckily all get along well!
From September 2002 to July 2003 I decided to study the drums at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. I learnt many different lessons studying primarily with Adam Bushell and Vinnie Lammi and I also met a lot of famous musicians along the way. During that time, I earned a Higher Diploma at Drums. It was at BIMM that I decided I wanted to become a drum teacher. I moved back to Jersey and devised a program to teach students that didn’t make them feel that they were back in school! My method of teaching has proved to be a success. I currently have students under the age of 8 playing songs by such acts as Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay and the Rolling Stones and many, many more!
Recently I have started to teach people how to drum around the world using Skype as well as in person. For details on how to learn using the Internet, please check out the Online Lessons Page.
Since January 2011, I have been creating Drum Kits and Cajons through my other business, Supernova Drum Co. SDCo. aims to create the finest drums that drummers can play and we ship worldwide to any location. Our drums are truly bespoke with many options on offer. Please check Supernova Drum Co. to see my drums. I use an SDCo. ‘Atom Series’ Drum Kit in my lessons that allows the student to hear what an acoustic set would sound like but with 80% less volume. It’s perfect for learning the drums!Categories: Music Tuition.
