A traditional yoga practice for people of all ages and levels of fitness - whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned practitioner.
In Jersey my youngest student is only 4 years old whilst my oldest is 86 - both can do a headstand with ease!
Classes are based on traditional Indian yoga with a focus on relaxation.
For me yoga is not simply an exercise class but a way of life.
Yoga began more than 5,000 years ago in the Indus valley in India. It was first brought to the West in the 1950’s and now you can practice many types of yoga that we have not even heard of in India.
In the West yoga is often identified only with what we call asanas (proper exercise), the yoga positions, but in fact yoga is much more than this.
Actually there are five aspects to yoga:
• Positive Thinking and Meditation
• Proper Breathing (pranayama)
• Proper Exercise (asana)
• Proper relaxation (savasana)
• Proper Diet (vegetarianism)
There is no doubt that the practice of yoga is of huge benefit to our health and wellbeing. However, in India yoga is not about building a beautiful body but about developing a strong and clear mind and inner calm. At its most basic level this can be understood if we consider how stress affects us. Stress affects people differently, some people become quite withdrawn whilst others become quite aggressive, either way stress unbalances our mind and our true self. One way in which yoga helps develop a strong and clear mind and inner calm is by providing a means of countering stress.Categories: Yoga.
