The splendid covered Victorian Central Market in the old heart of St Helier is an architectural gem which has been a source of pride to Islanders since it opened on 9 September 1883.
The Halkett Place market site was redeveloped in 1881 to celebrate the centenary of the Battle of Jersey. An architectural competition was held, and construction took two years to complete. The Market, which covers an area of 33,600 sq ft, is enclosed within railings set in gabled granite arches with seven gated entrances. Thirty-seven cast iron pillars topped with coats-of-arms set in ornamental struts support the octagonal glazed roof.
Jersey's public markets were first established in the late 16th century and remain an important and integral part of local life. There has been a market on the site of the Central Market since 1803 when the public market was moved from the Royal Square, 'Le Vièr Marchi' - the old market place.
There are 38 stalls under the high ornate roof, occupied by a wide range of traders including purveyors of fruit and vegetables, butchers, florists and flower sellers, antique dealers, cafés, jewellers and Vienna Bakery.
Manager Tom and team can be found behind the counter serving fresh breads, cakes, pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches, rolls, coffee, tea and hot snacks from Monday to Saturday from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm - except Thursday, the Market's traditional half-day closing and Jersey's special trading days.
With three deliveries a day and products baked on the premises, the Market Shop is THE place in St Helier to buy the freshest bakery products available in Jersey.Categories: Bakers / Bakery, Cakes & Cake Makers.
