Welcome to the Jersey Sandman
Hi my name is Andy Coutanche also known as the Jersey Sandman. I grew up in Jersey in the Channel Islands, surfing and making the most of Jersey's wonderful coastline.
About 6 years ago I started 'scratching' around on the beaches of Jersey. Since then I have been doing sandart in New Zealand,France,Bermuda,Jersey and it's surrounding reefs with a my great grandfathers rake. My early inspiration came from pictures of crop circles and a certain classic Led Zeppelin box set cover!
I started with small, simple patterns but since then the patterns have progressed quite rapidly and became more intricate each time I created one. I have been adding 3D effects and shading to the more recent ones. I do not have any plans or ideas when I head down to the beach, I walk on the sand and start raking, working with the natural flow of the beach. I don't use any string, measurements or stencils for any of the sand art I do, it's all totally free hand! It's just make it up as I go along! You can also see some of my time lapse videos of sand art and photos of more recent work on the facebook page.
My work has caught the eye of the international media and has appeared in 'Coast' magazine, 'OK ' magazine, The Telegraph newspaper and website, Metro magazine, planetgreen.discovery.com, travelinggreener.com and a number of other websites. Then in 2011 I was filmed by the makers of BBC 2's "COAST" programme at the world's first mymemory.com World Beach Art Championships which I helped to set up and took place in October 2011 in Jersey. The programme was shown on BBC2 at 9pm on Sunday the 17th of June 2012 and was called "The private life of beaches."
I was also very lucky to have been invited to Bermuda as guest artist and judge at their 'Bermuda Beach Art Festival' in March of this year which was fantastic experience. See my facebook page for more info.
I have done work for Sports Relief, British Heart Foundation and National Trust as well as other charities.
Recently, I have got back into working with stone and glass to create unique sculptures, light box sculptures and of course my sand art which have featured in a number of exhibitions. Some of these items will be available to purchase on my shop pages shortly.
