Jersey Surfboard Club, a very brief history!
With a history dating back to 1923 the Jersey Surfboard Club (Club) was developed when three South African Lifeguards began working on the Jersey beaches. Based around the St Ouen’s area the Club progressed through the early 60’s and 70’s producing numerous British and European champions.
In recent years the Club has enjoyed a period of growth. The size of its events has significantly increased, with the formation of a Channel Islands Surfing Federation, including the neighbouring island of Guernsey, has increased competition amongst the younger surfers.
In 2000, the Club played host to its largest event ever, the Junior European Surfing Championships which attracted national teams from 9 European nations. During 2001, the Club staged contests for surfers as young as 6 years of age, and formed the foundations of the Junior Academy. The Club continues to maintain its strong European links, with the Executive Committee of the European Surfing Federation (ESF) and Surfing GB. Doug Creedon, former president of the ESF,, still maintains a close rapport with the current committee of the ESF.
In 2007, the Channel Islands team reached 5th place, their highest place in a Eurosurf contest for some years. Added to the team success, there was individual success for Clayton Lidster who became European Masters Champion joining the ranks of former European champions, Gordon Burgis, Kenton Osmond, Dave Ward and Arlene Maltman.
British Championship success lies with Arlene Maltman, Open Women (x2) Renny Gould, Piers Gould, Bobby Male, Ben Skinner, Jonny Carden and Nathan Elms. Joe and Grace Davies along with Ben Skinner have won British Longboard titles. Ben Skinner was also runner up in the 2006 World ISA Championships at Huntington in the Longboard Division and was Oxbow European Longboard Series Champion in 2007.
Jonny Carden was 5th in the World Masters in New Zealand in 2005 and followed this by going with Clayton Lidster as part of the British team for the World Masters in Peru 2008. Jersey surfers have been part of many British teams especially during the 80’s where they travelled to Australia, California, Peurto Rico and South Africa. In 2009 the Club hosted the European Championships with local surfer, Ben Skinner, winning the Longboard title. In the same year juniors Matt Chapman and Nathan Elms were selected for the British team.
In May 2010, Josh le Marquand was crowned European Junior Longboard champion at the European Junior Championships in Viana, Portugal. In 2012 Jersey again sent a strong team to the Junior European Championship with numerous surfers reaching European top ten status.
In 2013, The Channel Islands team secured 4th place in the European Surfing Championships in the Azores with standout performance from Ben Skinner regaining his European title for the 3rd time. Following on from the Europeans both Ben Skinner and Ben Bates went to the ISA World Longboarding Championships in Huanchaco, Peru with Ben getting a silver medal and Ben Bates getting a credible 8th place.
