Optimus United Banks RFC (OUBRFC) are an amateur rugby team based in Grainville, Jersey. We play in the local JRA league, the local knockout cup and the Hampshire Cup/Plate. During the off-season, we also play in the local touch league and beach rugby tournament.
We played our first competitive game of rugby in 1967 and entered the local competition fulltime in 1969, which makes us the second oldest side on the island behind the Jersey Rugby Club.
Over the course of the past 45 years the club has enjoyed significant success and has won all the local competitions multiple times and is to date the last local side to defeat the Jersey 1st XV- albeit some 20 years ago!
In more recent times we finally achieved the pinnacle of Channel Islands domestic rugby in April 2012 when after many years of trying and two heart breaking defeats in the final we won the Hampshire Plate competition. In doing so, we became only the second Channel Islands club to achieve the feat.
Off the pitch, we’re the only amateur club in Jersey with a clubhouse and also have a fully licensed bar offering (probably) the cheapest pint in Jersey. The clubhouse is put to good use after matches, for our socials and in hosting touring teams– in the last couple of years we’ve hosted 8 sides from Guernsey, England, Wales, France and even Holland!
In addition to the rugby and the socialising, we pick a club charity each year – this year’s is the Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation (http://www.gracecrocker.org/Welcome.html) – to put on our match shirts and do various fundraising events throughout the year. This year we’ve run a relay marathon, staged a pub quiz, taken part in the Jersey Dragonboat Race and are organising a JRA-wide Swimarathon.
